Multi-media Water Treatment Filter

Multi-media Filter is excellent for cases where raw water pre-treatment, turbidity reduction and impurity removal are required in cooling water treatment, paper making, irrigation and industrial circulating water industries.

Introduction

The multi-media filter uses one or more filter media to pass high-turbidity water through a certain thickness of granular or non-granular materials under specific pressure, effectively removing suspended solids and clarifying water. Common filter media include quartz sand, anthracite and manganese sand. It is mainly used for iron and manganese removal, water softening and pre-treatment of pure water, with effluent turbidity reaching below 3 FTU. It is applied in cooling water treatment, raw water treatment, paper making, irrigation, industrial circulating water, food processing, sewage treatment and municipal tap water industries, filtering sand particles, suspended solids, algae and organic matter.

Working Principle

The multi-media filter (also known as mechanical filter) uses layered anthracite, sand, crushed garnet or other materials as the bed. The top layer of the bed is made of the lightest and coarsest material, while the heaviest and finest material is placed at the bottom. Its principle is depth filtration: larger particles in water are removed in the top layer, and smaller particles are removed deeper in the filter media. When raw water flows downward through the filter, suspended matter is intercepted on the surface of the filter layer due to adsorption and mechanical resistance; when flowing into the middle of the filter layer, the tighter arrangement of sand particles provides more opportunities for collision with sand grains, causing flocs, suspended solids and sand grains to adhere to each other. Impurities in water are trapped in the filter layer, resulting in clarified water. The effluent suspended solids after filtration can be below 5 mg/L.
